NLP Setting an Anchor Process to Get Back Motivation for Losing Weight
A client recently wrote saying, “When I was losing the weight I felt so good about my exercise and weight loss I actually considered going into the health field. I want to get that [feeling] back!”
It can be easier than you think to “get that feeling back.” That’s exactly the type of situation when you’d want to use the NLP process known as setting an anchor.
How to Set an Anchor
Start by just daydreaming about how it felt back then. Jot down notes if you can. Then answer these type questions (feel free to ask any questions you like).
How did it feel overall? Is there anywhere on your body you felt it strongly? What kind of feeling was it? Strong, mild, fluttery, tingling? What? Do everything you can to recreate exactly how it was for you back then.
How were you sitting or standing? How did you carry yourself?
What did you hear from others? Compliments? Encouragement?
Do you remember anything negative? Write it down.
Do you recall what you saw? Were you in a certain place? Was the sky a certain color, etc. Get every detail you can as vividly as possible.
You considered going into the health field? What type of work, exactly?
Write down every detail, and when you really feel it, just like you felt it back then, reach down and squeeze your knee.
That’s creating an anchor. Then, try again, all the same steps as above, ask yourself the same questions and then this time,
remembering as intensly as you can, squeeze your knee again. It may sound silly but it really works.
To test if it’s working, stand up, shake it off - think of the last movie you saw (think of anything else, just to get your mind clear). Get all the thoughts out of your mind, and when your mind is a blank, sit down, and squeeze your knee. Your thoughts will probably go to the good feelings, and memories of what it felt like when you were getting in shape that time.
That’s how you “set an anchor.”
Anchors like this are how you switch thoughts from negative to positive in the blink of an eye. If you are feeling bad, you just say, “Hey, this isn’t right,” reach down and squeeze your knee, and whoosh, you have those memories again.
The memories are something that can help put those feelings front and center for you again, and that’s what you want, to get back those feelings. Once you have those feelings, even if just a bit, you’ll become motivated to do what it takes to produce those feelings more and more, and maybe even pursue that a career in a health field.

Yogic Way of Controlling of Thoughts
As described in my earlier article… thoughts in the mind generate because we have five senses. So broadly there are five kinds of thoughts. Again each thought may either be of pleasure or of pain. This way there are ten types of thoughts. Patanjali further describes each of these ten types of thoughts may be based on proof(pramana), or an opposite(viparyay), or an alternative(vikalpa), or forming sleep(nidra) or forming memory(smriti).
Patanjali emphasized that thoghts based on proof should be accepted, because these are directly perceived. There are six things in the world which can be directly perceived; these are sight, sound, smell, taste, touch and soul(true self). While senses perceive sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, soul(atman) is perceived in the mind through total concentration(samadhi). No seventh thing exists in the whole universe that can be perceived directly. The thought of God and heaven as separate from soul is opposite to proven thought. This is because those who are unable to realise true self or are ignorant about the greatness of true self, depend upon alternative thought or dualism where soul is separate from and inferior to God. Such people remain in constant sleep and bear in themselves all past memories which include all traditional and religious believes and practices.
In order to control thoughts Patanjali teaches - thoughts may be controlled throgh practice(abhyasa) and detachment(vairagya)(I.12). Then he describes what practice is. Practice is to stay there carefully(I.13). But where is to stay? The answer lies in his previous instruction. A seer or practitioner should try to reach or stay there in true self.
In order to practice controlling of thoughts, one has to practice eight limbs(parts) of Yoga. The eight limbs of Yoga shall be described in a later article. At present, there are numerous Yoga shops operating accross the globe and selling yogic exercises, breathing exercises and meditation practices. But these are flawed and hazardous. Practitioners shall get the benefit of exercise only. They may not achieve the aim of Yoga, which is to realise true self.
This practice should continue regularly for a long time with sincerity and confidence(I.14). The final result may come later; but once a seeker starts practicing, he feels the difference. The body and mind becomes pure and light by dispelling undesirable elements like germs and disease from the body and evil thoughts from the mind. Mind becomes pure and intelligence becomes sharp. Such a mind overcomes ignorance, bondage and fear of death.
Now let us see what detachment(vairagya) is. Patanjali teaches - to remain dispassionate and to subjugate those things that are seen or heard of, is detachment(I.15). The world constitutes of all living beings and material things and to bring this world under control is subjugation(vashikara). Subjugation is not to bring everything under control through power, but to remain dispassionate to everything. This subjugation is detachment. One does not have to run away from the society; but by remaining in the society one may subjugate everything and develop detachment. Detachment is non-attraction. One should not be attracted to those things that are seen or heard of.
We see the attractive and beautiful objects of the world. But we should not be attracted towards them. Because the world is ultimately false. Objects that are seen and thoughts relating to them are based on proof. But they are of no use in realisation of true self. Similarly we should not believe those things that are heard of only. Gods and Goddesses, heaven and hell, angels and ghosts are only heard of. So Patanjali instructs a seer should not be attracted to those things that are either seen or heard of.

OOBE- Out of Body Experience is Real!
An interesting incident in the life of Ramana will explain about OOBE.
?Vasishtha Ganapathi muni? proclaimed Ramana of Thiruvannamalai, India,as ?Maharishi? meaning ?Great Sage? to the whole world.
Once ‘Ganapathi muni’ went to Thiruvotriur , now a part of Chennai, India. He started doing penance in the Ganehsa Temple. On the eighteenth day a strange thing happened. The Muni was wide awake, sitting and meditating. He suddenly saw Ramana there. Surprised he got up hurriedly with devotion welling up in his heart; but Ramana put his hand on the Muni?s head and made him sit down. The Muni was surprised and thrilled because the whole world knows that Ramana has never moved out of Thiruvannamalai.
When Ramana touched the Muni, a great Force cascaded through his frame. Billows of sheer joy rose from his heart and overflowed. At the same time, what happened to Ramana in Thiruvannamalai, he himself narrated later on in the course of conversation.
At that time, Ramana was as usual sitting in a cave on the hill of Thiruvannamalai. He experienced that from his heart a ray of light rose and darted through his head outside. Along with it Ramana went up the sky traveling on the path of the luminaries. He heard some-where the word Thiruvotriyur and came down. He walked up the road in front of him, saw the Ganesha Temple and entered it.
He spoke to Ganapathi Muni and touched him.
ESP Projection, ?astral projection?, ?out of body experience? are nearly, if not entirely, synonymous terms.
A study of ESP projection was reported by Homell Hart (1954), the chairman of a committee appointed for the purpose at an international congress in Europe. Hart defined a ?full-fledged? projection ideally as a situation in which a ?projected? individual carries within himself ?full memories and purposes? during his projection out of his body and afterwards.
Robert Crookall devoted nine volumes to out of body experiences. South African investigator J.CPoynton has collected 122 cases. English researcher Celia Green has brought 326 cases.
Astral body can be explained as an exact replica of the physical body but composed of finer matter.
Coming back to Ramana?s incident, Ramana exclaimed that he understood the way the Siddhas (meaning perfect souls or sages) travel in the air from place to place.
The OOBE experience is a step in Yoga siddhi (meaning one of the benefits of Yoga).
One who understands yoga and practice it could very easily understand OOBE.
