Breathing:
Although simple - If you breath correctly, you will find it easy to relax and provide adequete oxygene to your muscles. You will notice the difference when you breathe correctly as it will enhance your overall experience. Breathing is a major part of all pilates exercises. You simply breathe in through your nose for a count of five, and out through your mouth for a count of 5, with a shushing sound. Make the breaths into short, rhythmic bursts - in,in,in,in,in and shush, shush, shush, shush, shush. Never rush your breathing and don’t go overboard to the point that you feel light headed and fall over.
Toe Lifts:
This will help you with core balance. Core balance works in harmony with the alignment of your feet supporting your whole body. You will be amazed at how much strength your toes possess to balance your body. This movement strengthens the muscles on the top of your feet and increases the blood flow into your toes. Poor circulation to your feet can lead to stiff muscles and problems that affect the rest of your body.
This is a very simple exercise designed to improve circulation and enhance your awareness of balance.
Start standing with your feet together inlign with your body. Hold your head straight and keep your arms rested at your sides. Start simply by raising your right foot toes slowly up as far as they will go and then back down again. Do this a couple of times alternating feet.
Then lift up the toes of both feet at the same time pressing the metatarsal bones at the base of your toes strongly and evenly into the floor.
** Remember - Do not roll your feet inward or outward while performing the exercise. And do not lean back as you lift **
You should be breathing in as you lift, and breathing out as you lower your toes. Try closing your eyes as you exhale and lower your toes. Keep your eyes closed for five repetitions and you will notice an improvement in your sense of balance.
Finger Flicks:
This exercise improves the circulation in your arms and hands. The increased blood flow into the fingertips helps to flush out toxins and reduce arthritis or stiffness in the joints. It’s also a good forearm workout and is excellent for relieving aching elbows.
Start standing with your feet together inlign with your body. Hold your hands down in front of you below your waist and make loose fists by rolling up your fingers with your thumb on top. In this exercise your arms should always be fully extended as they move in a circular motion into six main positions.
1. Down and in front. Hands facing inwards.
2. Raised to shoulder height and in front. Hands facing inward
3. Stretched straight up. Hands facing inward.
4. Stretched out to the sides. Hands facing upwards.
5. Lowered to 45 degrees. Hands facing down.
6. Lowered to sides. Hands facing inward.
The idea is to strongly flick your fingers open continually throughout all the positions. Do eight flicks while you stand in position 1 and four flicks as you move to position 2. Do eight flicks while standing in position 2 and four flicks as you move into position 3. Continue this pattern.
** Remember - Keep your wrists still and your arms straight **
The Hundred:
This is a classic pilates exercise so named because it takes a count of 100 to complete. This exercise strengthens core abdominal muscles and expands the chest and ribcage.
This is a floor or mat exercise. It involves raising your legs to vertical and waving or pulsing your arms up and down in small motions.
1. Start by lying on the floor with knees bent as if you were doing sit-ups and have your arms resting palm down at your side.
2. Squeeze your abdominal muscles so that your head, neck, and shoulders raise off the floor. Keep your abdominals squeezed tight throughout the whole exercise. Stretch your arms forward toward your toes and start pulsing them up and down a distance of about 15cm. Stay is this position for a count of 20.
3. Slowly lift your legs to a 90 degree angle with your body. Continue the pumping for a further count of 20.
4. Slowly extend your legs straight up to the ceiling and keep pumping for 20 counts.
5. Begin to lower your legs at a 45 degree diagonal to your torso and keep pumping for 20 counts.
6. Keep your legs straight and lower them as close to the ground as possible without lifting your spine off the floor and keep pumping for 20 counts.
7. Lower your head to the floor. Release your arms, bend your knees, and place your feet back on the floor.
Roll-up to Diamond:
This exercise works your abdominals and improves flexibility of your spine. This is a floor or mat exercise and involves rolling up your upper body while extending your arms.
1. Lie with your legs in the diamond position. Keep your back flat on the floor and rest your arms on the floor above your head. The diamond position is when you point your toes and bring your legs into a diamond shape with your knees out to the sides.
2. Lift your arms toward the ceiling and slowly start rolling or peeling your upper body off the floor from your head down.
3. Keep peeling and extend your legs forward while keeping your toes pointed.
4. Stretch your arms and torso forward over your legs creating a C shape with your body. Keep your abdominal muscles tight and hold your arms directly around your ears.
5. Begin to roll back down to the floor pulling your legs back into the diamond position. Your arms should start to point to the ceiling again.
6. Finish in the starting position with your spine flat on the floor, your hands resting above your head and your legs in the diamond position.
** Remember - Keep the movement fluid and constant. Work with your abdominal muscles. Don’t straighten your spine while rolling. If you feel any stress or discomfort, hold on to your thighs until you are stronger. **

Yoga Teacher Tips: More Common Yoga Student Corrections
Always remember that it is better to be accused of being too cautious, than it is to be accused of negligence within a court of law. The Yoga teacher who is too safe can always find another teaching assignment. Below are some common problems that Yoga teachers should address for the safety of their students.
Spinal Rock: The eyes should focus on your heels, or navel, if possible. This causes the whole spine to round off and ?roll like a ball,? as opposed to ?crashing? off the floor. Rolling back should only go to the shoulders. Some Yoga students will be injured if they are not cautioned about rolling back on their necks.
During your Sun Salutation, or Vinyasa Sequence, where you perform a Monkey posture, which is also known as, ?Flat Back,? the body should take the shape of an inverted ?L.? The best way to master this posture is to draw, and elongate your spine, in a straight line, parallel to the floor. A mirror, or knowledgeable Yoga teacher, would be a big help for developing alignment.
You should caution your students about the jump backs on Sun Salutations, or Vinyasa Sequences. Anyone with a back condition can make it worse with the jump back or the jump forward; the reason being that when your feet land on the floor, the shock of the movement goes into the lower spine.
A similar movement we know as the ?squat thrust? was contra-indicated by the American Orthopedic Association, a few years ago. This movement is the same as the squat thrusts. Many Yoga teachers are very familiar with this movement from Ashtanga and Vinyasa styles, however, beware that each student is put at risk ? no matter how good their back feels today.
In Warrior I, please make sure that your Yoga student?s back foot is turned in 45 degrees. When the hip rotates forward, in the direction of the forward foot, this puts torque on the back knee. If a student has the back foot out at 90 degrees, this is a great deal of torque, and can cause premature wear within the soft tissue of the knee. It does not matter if this posture has been done this way for 5,000 years - when it can cause injury to a single student.
Upward Dog ? Watch for locking elbows ? if so, please allow for a slight crack in the student?s elbow joint, as the lockout will cause premature wear to his or her elbow joint.
Downward Dog ? Sometimes there is a slight amount of bouncing going on in this posture. You want to make sure that your Yoga students slowly drop into position, without any bouncing. The reason is that bouncing is a ?ballistic stretch? and can cause micro tears in the muscle tissue, which will result in less protection of the nearby joint.
Cobbler Pose ? The same bouncing ballistic stretch that can cause micro tears in the muscle tissue occurs when the knees bounce up and down. If you have a Yoga student who does this - stop him or her immediately.
Lastly, challenge your students to be the best they can be, but never put a single Yoga student in harm?s way. A Yoga teacher is primarily supposed to guide his or her students toward consistent healthy living.

Hot Yoga - Sweeping Away an Image
There are many benefits in using Bikram Yoga, which is a form of yoga that can totally change your life.
Bikram Yoga or Bikram Method Yoga, is widely known as ?hot yoga?. And was developed by Bikram Choudhury, who is 60 this year. Based now in the US, he is, of course, a yoga practitioner himself and he developed Bikram Yoga after injuring himself in a weightlifting accident.
Since then, many have proven the benefits of Bikram Yoga, so the practice has grown.
Some people practice Bikram Yoga for healing purposes and physical therapy. This type of yoga has proven helpful in bringing holistic (whole body) benefits, to those who practice it.
In order to be successful, with the healing processes, of Bikram Yoga, you need real devotion, because it is practiced in rooms with a recommended temperature of a minimum of 105 degrees farenheit and about 40% humidity.
This temperature is important because:-
- It (ironically) keeps the body from overheating
- To protect the muscles allowing for deeper stretching
- So that toxins are encourage to be ?sweated out? through open pores
- To thin the blood and encourage much better circulation
- It gives a better cardiovascular workout
- It improves muscle strength
- Fats in the body seem to be made more fluid and more easily cleared from the body
With this type of yoga, muscles are given a thorough workover. Cellular level lipids and proteins are reorganize optimally in such conditions, allowing for better circulation.
Joint strength and muscular alignment are better co-ordinated and together with strengthened bones, the organs of the immune system within the bones (red marrow) are boosted. It is a whole-body developmental experience.
The lymph nodes are massaged, lymph is pumped throughout the body, and white blood cells are distributed throughout the body as the lymphatic system works more efficiently.
Although there are some who do not believe in the benefits of Bikram Yoga. Bikram Choudhury developed it with the help of scientists from the University of Tokyo University Hospital.
They proved that Bikram Yoga has medical benefits including the repairing of tissues and curing chronic ailments. As early as 1972 the findings and benefits were presented at an International Medical Conference where it was confirmed scientifically that Bikram Yoga has the ability to affect the body internally.
Bikram has come up with twenty-six different posture exercises which are related, each working with previous postures, in a sequence, to treat the body effectively. This is a daily experience, where possible to maximise the benefit.
Anyone who wants to do yoga can use Biktam Yoga. It is not age specific. Because of the demanding nature of this type of yoga, if the body is weak, applying the practice and consequent healing will be difficult to achieve.
Thanks to Bikram Choudhury, we can now have some alternative solutions to some of our medical problems which really have been shown to be effective.
Always remember that the more you are able to practice this type of yoga, the more beneficial it is, but be careful to ensure that you are fit enough for it by having a medical check first.

Power Yoga And Powering It Up
Power yoga is sometimes known as the western version of Ashtanga Yoga which
brought by the Indians.
Beryl Bender Birch was the one who gave the term Power Yoga. He was a teacher of
Ashtanga Yoga and at the same time an author of Power Yoga.
Yoga was inspired and was brought to the west by the renowned Sanskrit Scholar Sri
K. Pattabhi Jo?s. The people of the west were inspired with his Ashtanga Yoga and
also his philosophies.
Power Yoga is described to be the practice of Yoga ?Poses? which is done
continuously in series of exercises without stopping. The practice is accompanied
by the Vinsaya which is known as riding the breath. This enables you to make
certain movements from one pose to another.
The power yoga is characterized by vigorous exercises which challenges your
physical and mental ability and concentration. This enables you to reach your inner
power and connect with it.
The difference of power yoga is that the poses are done faster in a pace. This
practice is essential and helpful in increasing your physical endurance.

certain practices of Iyengar yoga and Bikram also influenced power yoga.
Just like Bikram Yoga, notice that Power Yoga also applies the execution of the
common basic yoga poses which is a good practice because even the beginners can
do it.
Power yoga also adapted some practices of the Iyengar Yoga which gives emphasis
on the form and alignment during the practice. It also includes practice in holding a
pose longer without breaking which aims to achieve maximum benefits.
Although Power Yoga has been influenced by a lot of yoga types, still it aims on the
steps of ?Classical Yoga?. It aims to unite the body, the spirit and the mind uniquely.
The main objectives of yoga is for you to be able to connect to your inner power and
reach every level through the various poses and practices.
With the help of power Yoga, you can dig deep to your physical, mental and spiritual
power.

them to concentrate deeply but it also aids them in the prevention of injuries and
rehabilitation that may come.

What to Look for When Hiring a Yoga Teacher (Part 2)
Safety is a number one priority. Yoga teachers, who take risks with their students, put your business at risk. The Yoga teacher, who physically abuses, his or her students, is not in the right profession.
Compassion is more than diplomacy and popularity, but these are a big help. When a Yoga teacher has compassion, the class is motivated to come back to the next Yoga class. This is a ?win-win? situation for any facility, which employs compassionate Yoga instructors.
Communication is more than good cueing skills. Students learn primarily by seeing, listening, and feeling. One of these senses will be more dominant than the rest. A competent Yoga teacher will be able to reach all of these types of students.
Cueing is a skill refined by describing specifically how the body moves from one posture to the next. This is the hardest communication skill for most Yoga teachers to master.
Assisting is another communication skill, but must be applied gently, and with knowledge of alignment. Yoga teachers should ask for permission before making an assist. Otherwise, this can lead to misunderstandings. Assisting is great, but should not take over the entire class.
Demonstrating is very important. Some Yoga instructors like to walk around and cue. This is fine for part of the class, but what about the Yoga student who learns visually? This student is looking around at the Yoga teacher and everyone else.
Knowledge of alignment is not hard to learn, but some teachers get carried away with ?their own demonstration? and forget about everyone in the room. If a Yoga student is showing poor posture, it should be corrected.
Listening does not seem like a ?big deal,? but what about the Yoga teacher who doesn?t listen to his or her students? For example: A student has a problem in the L-5 area and the Yoga teacher decides to push the lower back a little. This could also be a lack of compassion, but some Yoga teachers do not listen to their students at all.
Modifications for beginners, older students, or those who have limited range of motion, due to skeletal compression are very important. The Yoga teacher, who makes no allowance for these conditions, also puts your facility at risk. Therefore, all Yoga teachers should know how to use props and have a good grasp of body mechanics.
Lack of teacher ethics can put you out of business. We are all aware of the consequences of harassment suits, so we do not have to go too deeply on this one. The best Yoga teachers treat everyone fair and equally. Discrimination of any kind is wrong and very costly.
Continuing education is important in any field, and Yoga is no different. Yoga teachers should stay current in their knowledge of safety, modifications, anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. They should also learn how to keep Yoga classes interesting with fresh ideas. In turn, this keeps members coming back for more.
Therefore, the best selection is a Yoga teacher with a balance of all these factors. The one dimensional Yoga teacher is not an optimum fit for any organization. Within this current climate of liability suits, safety is the most important factor of all.
Lastly, ask each Yoga candidate do an audition, and do not hire him or her until you have been part of the Yoga class. Always remember, ?Seeing is believing? and ?talk is cheap.?

Yoga Clothes for Comfort, Functionality - and Let’s Not Leave Out Fun!
Yoga clothes should be comfortable and functional. They should allow you to move freely and not distract you from your practice. They should feel good against your skin so they don?t cause any irritation.
Ideally, the clothing should be absorbent so that it wicks sweat away from your body. There are few things that feel as uncomfortable as a sticky, clammy body that is moist from perspiration.
I also think they should be attractive and fun to wear. When I do yoga alone in my home, I am willing to wear an old tee shirt and sweats or baggy shorts. When I practice in a class, I am more discriminating in what I choose to wear.
I admit it. I work very hard to keep my body in shape, and when I am with others, I want to show off the efforts of my hard work. I usually choose form fitting pants and a fitted tee shirt. This allows me to see the outline of my body in the mirror so I can maintain good form, and it lets me move without having to fuss with my clothes. They are also flattering to my body, so when I wear them I feel good.
Here are some of the things that you should look for in yoga clothing so that they work well for you and make you feel good about yourself and your practice.
Yoga Pants
There are many types of yoga pants. Some are long and go down to your ankles; others stop just below your knees. Often they are relatively form fitting. These types of pants have the benefit of allowing your instructor to see your alignment so she can make any necessary adjustments to your form.
If you aren?t comfortable in pants that are so revealing, you might enjoy wearing loose, cotton trousers. They offer freedom of movement without being too tight.
Whatever pants you choose, make sure that you can bend and move freely in them. Also be sure that there are no bulky ties at the waist that might be uncomfortable when you are lying in a prone position.
Yoga Shorts
Yoga shorts are a very good choice if you practice Bikram or hot yoga, because the room is heated to such a high temperature. They are a good bet in the warm summer months when long pants might be too warm. They also help you more easily check the proper alignment of your lower body because you can see your knees and ankles.
The yoga shorts should be long enough to cover your derriere and they should not ride up. Form fitting shorts usually don?t move too much, so they may be just right for you.
Yoga Tops
Yoga tops should allow you to move freely without having them fall in your face. Tee shirts should be short enough so that your lower body is not hidden, so you can more easily check your alignment. Some women like to wear sports bras (especially those who practice Bikram yoga). If you choose to wear one, make sure that it holds you securely and that nothing falls out when you are bending or stretching. You don?t want to wear something that is going to cause you to worry about what you might be showing to the rest of the class.
Yoga tops come in many bright and attractive colors. You might also have fun wearing shirts with characters such as Yoga girl on them.
Yoga Shoes
Most people do not wear shoes during their practice. However, they might be useful if you practice outside in a park, on a beach, or some place where you would not want to take off your shoes and socks. Yoga shoes look very similar to other athletic footwear, except that the soles allow for considerable flexibility in your foot and the tops of the shoes are very lightweight. Some popular brands include Puma yoga shoes and Adidas shoes for yoga.
Jacket
Many people might not think that a jacket is an important part of yoga clothing, but I beg to disagree. I think it is absolutely critical to take a jacket with you to your yoga class. I have been in many classes where the temperature has been quite cool (some are downright freezing). While the temperature often doesn?t matter too much while I am moving during the poses, it becomes quite a different story when the time comes to meditate.
I don?t know about you, but I find it difficult if not impossible, to relax when I am cold. Bringing a jacket with you gives you an option of covering up during the relaxation period if you are feeling chilly. Feeling warm and comfortable allows you the pleasure of letting your body relax fully.
So yoga clothes should be functional, comfortable, and give you the freedom to totally enjoy your practice. Have fun with them and enjoy wearing the ones that make you feel good!
