Yoga in Practice: In Search of the Perfect Yoga - Part 2

This is a continuation of answers to some very ?interesting? statements about Yoga and its many styles. Please don?t take the statements in quotations too seriously; let?s hope these answers will open minds.

?Mine is the best Yoga style and all others are inferior.?

Many students make this claim and I ?set them straight,? right away. If you are getting a lot out of your Yoga practice, don?t be so quick to ?put down? other styles of Yoga. It is ironic when people practice something that literally means ?unity,? and then they let the ego get in the way.

Shouldn?t we just be happy that someone else is trying, or practicing, Yoga - instead of sitting on the couch? If you are a Yoga teacher, do not encourage this kind of thinking. Yoga teachers are very often familiar with many styles of Yoga, so we should know better.

If you are a student, please open your mind by trying other styles of Yoga. You will find more treasure each time you visit a different Yoga class. Always come back to your root practice, and teacher, but leave your mind open.

?Are seniors really getting anything out of Chair Yoga??

The very first person who said this to me is now a Chair Yoga teacher. You can imagine the convincing I had to do, including her participation in Chair Yoga classes. The energy, and enthusiasm, within Yoga classes with seniors, is priceless and contagious. Some participants feel improvements right away, and their attendance to Yoga classes is much more regular than any other age group.

Chair Yoga is not only for seniors but for those who are wheelchair bound, in physical rehabilitation, or going through a healing process. The positive results of Chair Yoga practice are quite dramatic. Anyone who witnesses the healing effect of Chair Yoga practice is an instant believer.

For me, Chair Yoga is a God given gift that I happily pass on, and it improves everyone?s health in the process. Anything this good should not be kept a secret.

?If you need to use props, you are a beginner.?

Absolutely Wrong! Your style may not use props, and you may not know how to use them, but props do help with alignment. Most of us mere mortals do not have perfect bodies, so a prop can make a tremendous difference with alignment.

If you want to know more about props, visit an Iyengar Yoga, Restorative Yoga, or Kali Ray Tri Yoga class. There are also a number of books, and a few videos, available. The guidance of a compassionate and competent teacher will help you learn so much about props to help your practice, and that of others, who feel intimidated by Yoga.

Time to Practice Yoga

There are many things that we know, we should do, but there?s never enough time. Would you like to have more time for your family, Yoga practice, and some quality time, in your life? Maybe, work keeps you too busy, from doing the right things, for yourself, and your loved ones. So, what can you do?

After all, you need to put food on the table and work is a priority. In reality work is only a part of life, and you would realize that, if you lost your job. All of us go through a grievance period, after losing a job, marriage, or a loved one.

At that point, we must make a decision, to continue on, or give up. Now, I am assuming you are not the type to give up. After moving on, we look back at the pain and healing process. Our personalities are developed, and conditioned, from many components. These components help us “keep it together,” such as: Family, friends, work, prayer, and hobbies.

Most of you know that Yoga means “unity,” but do you realize you are practicing union, or unity, every day, even if you don?t officially practice in a Yoga class? Below is a list of things that you should do every day, or almost every day.

You will notice, that work should not be done every day, in order to live life in moderation. Everyone needs a day off, so enjoy your weekends, when possible, and don?t skip vacations.

Prayer is part of every religion and should be a part of every day. I don?t care what religion you practice, that is your business. Luckily, most of the religions on this planet have universal principles that apply to all. Don?t forget that, you need spiritual, physical, and mental health to be complete. By the way that?s a Yogic principle too.

Family time is so important that we have a dysfunctional generation growing up, due to lack of attention to our children. Some children don?t really know their parents, because they are sometimes brought up by someone else, or a day care center. Lack of bonding time creates inherent problems for parent and child.

Take the time to eat together without arguments and play with your children. Expose your children to religion, games, hobbies, humor, and Yoga practice. Give your spouse or partner a hug and tell them how valuable they are. Self-worth and recognition keep them going too.

Good friends should not be ignored. They are few and far between. You may find your Yoga friends to be valuable company too.

Be conscious of all the following every moment that you can. Breathing doesn?t have to be learned from your Yoga teacher and forgotten. You should practice proper breathing every moment you think of it.

Proper posturing should be practiced when you are sitting, standing, walking, eating, and using your computer. Exercise should be part of everyday and you should be conscious of your nutrition at all times.

Consuming eight glasses of water per day minimum is important for digestion, elimination, your skin, your vital organs, and removing toxins. Please spare the excuses - many people have no problem drinking eight sodas per day. By the way, that?s not good, even if it is diet soda.

Work is a must, unless you are independently wealthy. Work should also help you keep your sanity. If this is not the case, look for a job that is rewarding.

Hobbies are good for your sanity too, but like all of the above they are part of a healthy life. So, how can you make all of this fit into your life? If you go to Yoga classes, you already do.

However, if you haven?t had the time to learn or practice Yoga, you must make the time. Once you do, you will wonder why it took you so long, to start learning Yoga. You will make new friends and live a happier life.

Yoga Versus Pilates - Which Should I Do?

Many have heard of yoga and Pilates. But, not everyone realizes that there are several differences between these two types of exercising regimens. In fact, yoga is hardly classified as just an exercise program. Each of these methods are quite powerful tools to allow you to feel and look better. But, they are also very different. In order to help you to make a choice between yoga and Pilates, let?s explain them a little further.

Yoga - It came way earlier

Yoga has been around for over 5000 years. It is something much more than just a way of exercising. In fact, it is a lifestyle change that many people need to take seriously. This type of program is centered on the spiritual healing of the body as well as the physical aspects. It uses a wide combination of breathing and movements to get the body back into its targeted range. Yoga is something that encompasses the entire lifestyle in ethical, spiritual and physical form.

It is important to note that yoga is centered on meditation and that the poses that are done are done to allow for better concentration and better meditation abilities.

Pilates - It’s a whole different animal

Pilates, on the other hand, is a physical healing process that uses movements and breathing to work. In Pilates, the body is taken from one movement to the next in a fluid change. This allows for continuous improvement in the body in a normal way. Pilates uses Contrology in its dance form. In this, the poses that are done are more fluid and provide for a more natural movement from one to the next.

Both of these types of programs allow for individuals to improve in their health and well being through breathing techniques. Controlled, regulated breathing is very important to the success of yoga or Pilates.

Which Should I Choose?

In order to know which of these you should choose, the best way to know which the better choice is for you is to actually give them a try. Sign up for a couple of classes and give them a try each. Which methods and processes do you feel more comfortable with? Which works the best for your lifestyle? The choice between yoga and Pilates is something that you need to make on your own.
