The word 'YOGA' is derived from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. The literal meaning of Yoga is addition, or joining or combining. The practice of Yoga involves a set of routines and carefully controlled lifestyle which help in realizing inner potential, attaining higher consciousness level and aligning or becoming one with the all pervading consciousness or energy level. While attempting to reach the goal, there is tremendous improvement in physical, mental and emotional health.
Yogic postures, called Yogasanas, form one component of Yogic practices. By themselves these postures can bring about awesome benefits in overall fitness. There are prescribed methods of doing these exercises. Basically one has to form the body in a particular posture, hold the body in that posture for sometime and then slowly come back to what we can call the posture of rest. These exercises are characterized by absence of jerks and slow body movements.
To understand these exercises better let us compare them with dynamic exercises with which we are more familiar, such as acrobatics, gymnastics, jogging etc. These exercises are effective on muscular, circulatory and respiratory systems. There are dynamic Yogic exercises (different from Yogic posture exercises) which also stimulate nervous and glandular system. All these exercises involve speed and dynamic body movements resulting in expenditure of energy and perspiration.
In Yogic posture exercises there is deep relaxation and energy conservation resulting in freshness. This is basically a nerve culture as it relaxes the nerves. The exercise starts from the posture of rest. First lie down in this posture, calm down your breathing, calm down your nerves and calm down your thoughts. Then form the posture you have in mind with slow body movement without jerk of any kind. Posture exercises are accompanied by prescribed breathing pattern. This posture is maintained for prescribed length of time which may be several seconds to few minutes. Then come back slowly to the posture of rest. After remaining in rest for 30 seconds to few minutes, the next posture exercise is done. This pattern is repeated for as long as you wish to do the exercise. Normally exercise workout routine for 30 minutes in a day is good enough for an average person.
Doing these exercises regularly gives remarkable benefits. Generally circulation of body fluids improves and metabolic activities become more efficient. Better blood circulation ensures more thorough distribution of oxygen in the body and more complete removal of toxins. Additionally each posture benefits particular set of organs and muscles. Depending upon the need and condition of health, tailor-made set of exercises can be designed.
Many people believe that life-force flows in our nerves. When the flow of life-force is unregulated and uncoordinated it provides conditions for development of body disorders or ailments from within the body. Yogic posture exercises work very well in this area and prevent ailments. The overall body vigour and freshness are maintained. There is a balance of metabolic activities and unnecessary growths in the body are avoided.
If you are looking for general well being, life free from diseases and lifetime fitness regular Yogic posture exercises can help you. Though these exercises can be combined with other work-outs, they can by themselves provide all the workout routine you need for maintaining a good health.

Yoga: Simplify Your Life
The thought that life can be simple for many of us is a hope and a dream that we can’t afford to wait to happen. We have to make an effort towards it. And as many would agree, it starts with avoiding the pains, problems and frustrations of disease by changing to habits which result in good health. It is only in good health that life seems worth living anyway.
No matter how much we would want to rely upon outside influences, people, doctors or medicines, we all begin to realize, more than ever before, that we each have to do our part in building and maintaining our own health. This has to be done in spite of so many factors that are against us, such as environmental pollution, water problems, chemicals in food and many others.
Hygiene was once a very basic and important health measure to avoid contagion of every kind. That laxity that now exists throughout many medical institutes and hospitals and also out in the community is quite distressing and makes good community health even more difficult. But it remains first on the agenda of yogic disciplines.
Most of us realize that the simple life is usually the healthiest and that it is sensible to eat healthy fresh, natural food and to avoid the processed and refined commercial products, each of which usually contains chemicals and preservatives one would not choose to eat - that is, if we read the label! Anyway there is nothing as enjoyable as simple fresh food prepared in the home kitchen.
Exercise is a bit of a problem but we are generally fortunate to have access to health farms and fitness establishments that encourage exercise. Body building also encourages us to exercise, as well as the local walks and our yogic exercise disciplines. But we never seem to be able to do enough exercise as there never seems to be enough time. We must make time!
We know to breathe deeply to get enough oxygen for our body cells. But pollution of the atmosphere in the cities and suburbs makes it more difficult particularly for those who already suffer from asthma. So we have to practice yogic breathing exercises in the best possible outdoor situation we can manage as it is inadvisable to practice in air conditioned environments. Yoga teaching gives breathing deeply and gaining control of the breath top priority. It’s interesting to discover how much more control of the breath and how much more energy we seem to have after practicing for a few weeks.
We may have forgotten to consider the importance of an erect body posture when walking, sitting or at times of rest but through practicing the Yoga asanas one becomes very much more aware that the body can only function well if the vital organs are not under constant pressure. So we begin to stand tall.
So it seems for improved health and as a simple natural health insurance program, we should consider hygiene, fresh food diet, body posture, exercise and our breathing habits. To these well known factors, the yogic teaching adds an occasional fast, the addition of herbs as food supplements, some special body postures or asanas to improve health problems and the practice of relaxation.
But these relate to physical health measures to help us feel vital.
What about the psychological factors which will help us to feel happy?
In yoga classes we are taught how to relax our minds and bodies for two reasons. One is to become free of stresses and strains. The other is to enjoy a whole range of pleasant moods and feelings when we are quiet and there is nothing to do. We begin to be aware of other parts of our nature that have been neglected because of our constant activity.
Relaxing out on the floor isn’t as difficult as it sounds, in fact it becomes quite comfortable after getting used to being without mattress and pillow! When you lie there with your eyes closed instead of going to sleep as is tempting sometimes, you feel so calm and almost floating and it is so pleasant you seem to be all feeling instead of thinking - just by lying still! It’s much better than taking sedatives.
Meditation is a kind of relaxation for the mind but we have to sit upright to do this. Some people cant manage to sit cross legged, in fact not many are able to in a class, but classes have alternative positions and they can find one that’s suitable. Then we do the same thing, keeping still, shutting our eyes, breathing rhythmically and when we get tired of that just sit there a little longer and it feels really pleasant. You’ll even stop thinking about whether you left the gate open and other things that generally come into your mind. You may like to practice this at home.
Somehow when we are relaxed we begin to feel more content. Then we begin to think more clearly in deciding what we really want with our lives. Then we find we have the energy and vitality needed to go ahead and do it. In living fully, we realize that we are happy. It is simple!

Pilates ? What Is It?
Founder of this system, Joseph Pilates, took some of his inspiration from yoga. It utilizes the power of the mind to help with the exercises and to increase harmony between body and mind. The exercises are different from yoga because they work the body as a whole, not particular muscle groups. Mr. Pilates was sickly as a child. He became interested in fitness while working with immobile patients as an orderly during WWI. He developed a series of exercises using springs attached to their beds. He discovered that people became stronger more quickly when certain apparatus was used. After the war he moved to America and opened a fitness studio in NYC. His techniques attracted many well known people.
Although the use of equipment is part of the Pilates program, the original system was based on matwork. The basic principles concentrate on rhythmic breathing, centered posture, smooth movements and a focused mind.
There are many benefits to be obtained from doing Pilates regularly, including more self- confidence and an increased sense of well being. Physically, you will develop a leaner body, have better circulation, more efficient digestion and an enhanced immune system. Other benefits may include improved skin, less stress and clearer thinking through increased oxygen intake. Pilates helps you to build strength and flexibility, but to increase stamina it should be combined with a cardiovascular program such as aerobics.
If you are in reasonably good health, Pilates is suitable for you. If there is a qualified teacher near you, you may want to take classes. However, you can design a program in your own home and practice at your own convenience. Some things to keep in mind if you choose to do this are: Have a comfortable spot for floor exercises, wear comfortable, non- constricting clothing, drink plenty of water, warm-up before and cool-down after you finish.
While learning the different exercises, don?t forget the importance of rhythmic breathing. When you inhale you are not only taking oxygen into your lungs, the act also circulates blood around the body. When you exhale, you expel stale air and gasses such as carbon dioxide from your lungs. If you hold your breath during physical effort, carbon dioxide will accumulate in your body and weaken your muscles. Holding your breath can increase blood pressure, make you tense and waste energy. Also, good posture is an important part of doing the exercises correctly.
If you suspect that your posture is poor, you may want to consult a qualified Pilates instructor to help correct it. A useful tip to help check your own posture is to have someone take two photographs, one in a standing and one in a sitting position (side views). Some things to look for: rounded shoulders, a protruding stomach, your head or chin jutting forward. Before you begin each set of exercises, be sure to begin with the right posture.
There are websites and books available to teach you the various exercises. Proceed at your own pace. Taking the time to do them correctly is vital. Learn the art of visualization. It is a fact that visualizing something can help it to come true. So put a picture in your mind of how you want to look or feel and it will help to keep you motivated to get the results you want.

Yoga Teacher for a Day, Part 1
Many Yoga teachers are often asked what a typical working day is like. This is a very ?broad question,? as there are so many types of Yoga to study, practice, and teach. In India, there are nine popular styles of Yoga, but outside of India, only three of the main Indian Yoga styles have gained significant popularity - those three being Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Raja Yoga.
Most common are the many Hatha Yoga sub-styles. There are so many Hatha Yoga sub-styles, that it is easy for the public to be confused about which style of Yoga is most familiar to them.
Getting back to the issue at hand - this example of a typical working day is based upon my experience, the experiences of my staff, and the experiences of Yoga teachers who I come into contact with. Please bear in mind that many Yoga teachers work part time, but there are many, like me, who work at teaching Yoga full time, as well.
When you are teaching Yoga as a full time occupation, your day begins with a meditation. A Yoga teacher should be an example of good health, and meditation is good for mental, spiritual, and physical health. Many people do not see the connection between meditation and physical health.
Therefore, I will draw you a mental picture. Look at people who are ?stressed out,? depressed, over anxious, angry, or in poor mental health. This is very taxing on the physical body, and many of these people are not in good physical health as a result. In fact, mental and spiritual health is linked to physical health.
Most people with mental health issues feel no connection with the physical body and may neglect their physical health as a consequence. How often do you hear, ?I don?t have time for meditation, Yoga, exercise, eating right, God, or praying?? Unfortunately, we hear these things far too often. People deny their spiritual health for the sake of being ?politically correct.?
The public needs your help and if you are going to teach Yoga to anyone, drive through traffic, work with the public, and teach a healthy lifestyle, you must be an example of good holistic health.
Yoga teachers spend time preparing each lesson plan. The particular lesson plan is designed for the needs, health, and age of the group. I have found book stores, libraries, and the office, to be the best places for concentrating on a Yoga lesson plan.

Yoga: Adding Balance to Your Life
For 5,000 years, yoga has been a path to good health and conscious living. Would you like to increase your physical vitality, mental clarity, and heighten your spiritual awareness? Regardless of your age or physical condition, yoga can bring you these benefits.
Yoga is training in listening to our bodies. By tuning in through awareness of our breath, through conscious movement in the poses and in the transitions between the poses, we can receive an amazing amount of information from our bodies.
The stuck places, the places in our bodies where energy is blocked, cause us discomfort in order to get our attention. What is that ?stuck place? in your body trying to tell you? You can mentally go inside that place, breathe into the area, expand it with your breath, then relax, open your mind and ask your body what the stuck area is trying to tell you. Be open to the message and you may find the discomfort beginning to melt away.
What are the benefits of yoga?
Yoga has been clinically shown to lower blood pressure, increase circulation, build muscle tissues, increase flexibility, relieve stress and stress-related symptoms, and strengthen the respiratory system. Other benefits can include relief from symptoms of menopause, counteracting osteoporosis, cleansing the internal organs, energizing the nervous system, balancing out the digestive system and obtaining relief from headaches and lower back pain. For caregivers and others with a hectic, stress-filled life, yoga is Yoga is a way to decrease your stress level and increase your stamina and flexibility. Do I have to stand on my head?
There are as many different styles of yoga as there are yoga teachers. Yoga classes range from very gentle meditative yoga, to very intense and challenging ?power yoga.? It?s important to find a style or a class that is right for your level of ability and for your body. Whatever style of yoga you choose, tune in to your body and do only what feels supportive and beneficial to you.
Although headstands, and shoulder stand, can be an excellent way to improve circulation and concentration, they are not for everyone. In particular, if you have suffered any damage to your neck or back, headstands may not be good for you.
But there?s a yoga style that?s right for everyone. Yoga is now widely taught in yoga centers, YMCAs, on TV, and is available on video, audiotapes and in many of books. Whatever method you choose, be sure to choose a class and teaching style that inspires and is appropriate for you. There as many different yoga styles as there are yoga teachers, so shop around.
Just give it a try. If you?re breathing, you can do yoga. One of the simplest of yoga poses is called ?Savasana,? the corpse pose is the pose of deep relaxation. The idea is to consciously bring your attention to each part of your body and relax it completely, as free from tension as if you were a corpse.
Lie comfortably on your back with a pillow under your knees to support your lower back. Throughout this relaxation exercise, you can first tense the muscles to bring your awareness to them and then completely relax the areas.
Begin with your feet. Consciously tense, then relax, all the muscles in your feet and ankles, then tense and relax the muscles in your calves and knees, then in your thighs, hips, buttocks and lower back.
Relax your groin and abdomen, your ribs, and collarbones, and your upper back. We often carry tension in muscles without knowing it.
After you have relaxed the muscles in your chest, in your arms, shoulders and your neck, you can move on to relax your head and face. Try clenching your jaw and then releasing it; scowling, then releasing your forehead, even tensing the muscles around your ears!
After you have tensed and relaxed every muscle in your body, lie quietly for at least 10 minutes and rest. You will be grateful for the deep relaxation you?ll experience.
A roaring exercise
Another way to relax the muscles in your face is to practice roaring like a lion! Sit comfortably, then open your mouth and eyes very wide, and raise your hands near the sides of your face with the palms out and fingers stretched and breath outwards loudly as if you were roaring. This can be great fun (even if it does look a little silly). It can help expand your lungs and help your face muscles relax.
