Yoga is a complete disciplining routine, involving all kinds of physical and meditative exercises. It uses a wide combination of breathing and movements to get the body back into its targeted range. Yoga is centered on meditation and the asanas (postures) that are done, are done to allow for better concentration and better meditation abilities.
The first step to performing yoga is to still and calm the mind, hence achieving the strengthening of one’s body and mind. If the mind can be stilled, the spiritual power can be felt within. Meditation is the state achieved from intense concentration on a single object until all other thoughts vanish and all that is left is an intense awareness of the object. There is nothing else in mind for some time.
Even though yoga has been around for over 5000 years in India, it was relatively unknown till sometime back. It has gained prominence only during recent times. It is estimated that millions of people are practicing yoga in the US and UK. Slowly people are realizing that it could be the single solution for most of the prevalent ills in the modern age. Stress, blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes are the various ailments caused due to our busy life. Yoga has a cure for all of them.
The discipline of yoga has been rejuvenated in modern times. Numerous people have been responsible for this increased awareness of yoga, mainly those who have benefited from it. The primary factor responsible for the rejuvenation in India, the land of its birth, has been Swami Ramdev. Swami Ramdev started relentless efforts to popularize Yoga in 1995 and began his yoga programs in India on television in 2002. He says that through Pranayama (the breathing in of life), the yogic practice of breath control can cure even ‘incurable diseases’. Pranayama helps the body to become a lot more flexible and fitter.
There has been no following larger than that of Swami Ramdev in the recent times. Today, he is one of the biggest draws on Indian television. His programs are followed by millions of people around the country religiously. He believes that all ills can be cured by avoiding medicines, active practice of yoga and simple dietary habits. Yoga along with ayurveda (treatment using herbs) is capable of curing even diseases which are usually not possible to cure using traditional medicines. He strives for a ‘medicine-free’ world for the whole of humanity. His teachings are open to people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world. People have greatly benefited from his week-long camps organized for the needy. People from all religions, young and old, rich, poor, educated and illiterate - each finds a place there. He lays down simple guidelines, which can be followed easily.
His practical approach to Yoga has won him millions of followers throughout India. People have begun to see yoga in a new light, a totally rejuvenated yoga. Other than curing of illnesses and the telecast of his programs on TV, the primary reason for the rejuvenated yoga is the easy manner in which it is presented now. In other words, quick benefits with minimal efforts.
Yoga, with its new presentation, has helped people in developing healthy habits by waking up early in the morning, followed by energizing yoga practice, thanks to TV channels and Swami Ramdev. Technology has contributed immensely to the popularity of yoga. This great phenomenon of enlightening the people has been possible only due to TV, which has taken yoga to the common public. Had it not been so, yoga would have been still at the same place, where it was centuries ago.

Basics of Blood Pressure
The heart is a vital organ that pumps blood to different parts of the body. The outflow of the blood takes place when the heart’s left ventricle contracts. Then the blood is forced into the arteries, which expand to receive the incoming blood. These arteries have a muscular lining, which resists this pressure. Thus, the blood is squeezed out of them into the smaller vessels of the body. By blood pressure, we mean the amount of pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the arteries. The amount of pressure depends on the heart muscle’s strength, the amount of blood in the circulatory system and the condition of the arteries.
There are two kinds of pressures - maximum and minimum. The maximum pressure occurs when the left ventricle contracts. It is called systolic pressure. The minimum pressure occurs just before the heartbeat which follows. It is called the diastolic pressure. When a doctor measures the blood pressure, he uses an instrument in which a column of mercury rises or falls under the pressure. It is marked in millimeters. The average systolic pressure in a young man is about 120 mm of mercury and the diastolic pressure is about 80. These figures are usually stated as 120/80 or 120 over 80.
Blood pressure usually rises with age because the arteries become less flexible. Anxiety or exercise may also cause pressure to rise temporarily. It is also increased by a number of diseases. A person is said to have high blood pressure or hypertension of it exceeds the 100 plus his age or if his diastolic pressure is greater than 100. High blood pressure can cause heart failure, apoplexy, or kidney diseases. Abnormally low blood pressure occurs when a person has a heart attack or loses large amount of blood because of some injury etc. When the blood press falls considerably, the oxygen supply to the brain and other parts of the body also are reduced. This can result in serious complications including death. Physicians use drugs, which contract the muscular walls of the blood vessels to raise the blood pressure.
Abnormally high blood pressure may be due to the constriction of arteries. It may also be due to damage to one or both kidneys causing them to release more rennin. Excessive weight and lack of exercise can also contribute to hypertension. High blood pressure may cause heart failure. It may also burst a blood vessel in the eye or the brain and cause blindness or a hemorrhage.
When someone has high or low blood pressure, he or she should consult a good doctor and undergo proper treatment. High blood pressure has no cure but can be kept under control by regular monitoring. With modern technology, it is no longer needed to have a stethoscope and pump meter to display someone’s blood pressure. Instead, electronic gadgets that can be attached to the forearm or even the wrist have appeared that accurately provide the reading to the patient without the help of another person. Such devices should be used regularly by a person diagnosed with high blood pressure to ensure a healthy living.

Restorative Yoga for Stress Management
We now know that stress contributes to a multitude of ailments, such as: headaches, backaches, high blood pressure, stomach disorders, lowered immunity, muscular tension, depression, heart attack, and much more. Stress is definitely a ?killer? and the source of many health problems.
In fact, stress will prevent and distract your body from healing itself. While you are feeling ?stressed out?, your body and mind make dealing with stress the number one priority. Your mind and body need to cope with regular maintenance and overall health, on a daily basis, by putting stress on the back burner.
Are you looking for a way to release stress, tension, and pain from your body? Are you tired all the time and feel the need to rest, but you know you should get some exercise? How can you do both? The answer is to start regularly attending Restorative Yoga classes, and reap the rewards of healing without a tremendous amount of effort.
There are many styles of Yoga to choose from. In India, there are nine main styles of Yoga, and Hatha Yoga is just one of them. Hatha Yoga, ?the union of physical mastery,? and its many sub-types, are the most popular in the West.
Among the many Hatha styles of Yoga, are traditional and contemporary types of Yoga. Restorative Yoga is classified as a contemporary type of Hatha Yoga. Some might also say that Restorative Yoga is an evolutionary form of Hatha Yoga. The use of props, ?sinking into? postures, safety factors, and attention to the internal body, is very rewarding.
This is not usually a class for the vigorous Yoga practitioners who want to move, push, and sometimes strain, in a Yoga posture. Unfortunately, straining will cause long-lasting injuries. Learning Yoga does not have to be a strain or struggle. Restorative Yoga usually attracts a person who is interested in healing his or her body, in the process of attending a Yoga class.
If you have ailments, feel nervous, or are attending your first Restorative Yoga class, you should consult with your Yoga teacher, before class time. Your Yoga teacher may be able to advise you in regard to techniques that will alleviate stress or pain. You can expect that your Yoga teacher will be compassionate and modifications to postures will be taught.
Your body and mind will feel the benefits of relaxing into a Yoga posture. As a result, you be able to balance your life, and feel the benefits of integrating good posture, stillness, movement, relaxation, proper breathing, and meditation.
Every one of these aspects is covered within a typical Restorative Yoga class. So, you can expect to start healing your body and mind during your first Yoga class. You will also continue to keep your priorities in order, while keeping worry, stress, depression, and fatigue on the ?back burner.?

Winning Over High Blood Pressure
There is direct relation between alcohol and blood pressure. Not a happy relationship. You pay for the alcohol and buy blood pressure and again pay for treating the blood pressure! The double loss game!
This is just one strong reason. The disease of blood pressure is due to various other reasons. The crush of the materialistic modern civilization is too much to bear in the metropolitan cities. If you view the News Channel, your mind is likely to get more agitated. Instead of peace of mind, you get piece of mind!
These problems are interrelated and it is difficult to segregate the cause and effect, once you are trapped. For example, too much of alcohol, is the cause of high blood pressure. It is also responsible for weight increase.
Weight increase in itself is the cause of blood pressure. If you take medication for weight loss, again it has the potentialities for side effects. To treat the side effects, your doctor will again give some more medicines. The vicious cycle goes on. You will soon reach a stage, where you suffer form all sorts of deficiencies and diseases.

Forget medications for a while. I am not telling you that they are of no use. But the strategy of the moment is to change your lifestyle. Change in your food habits. Think positively that you are capable of beating blood pressure. Just give up junk food for ever. That is one of the contributing factors for your constipation, which again is one of the reasons for increase in your blood pressure.
If you are taking more than 2 spoonfuls salt per day, it is time to cut it. Give up processed foods and switch over to fruits and vegetables. Limit the sweets. Have a regular schedule of exercises. Meditation, breathing exercises, cycling, jogging, brisk walking, all these count a lot in reducing your blood pressure.
Along with the changed habits, develop a habit of thinking positively. Your supreme will power can cure any type of blood pressure.
