Rejuvenated Yoga

Yoga is a complete disciplining routine, involving all kinds of physical and meditative exercises. It uses a wide combination of breathing and movements to get the body back into its targeted range. Yoga is centered on meditation and the asanas (postures) that are done, are done to allow for better concentration and better meditation abilities.

The first step to performing yoga is to still and calm the mind, hence achieving the strengthening of one’s body and mind. If the mind can be stilled, the spiritual power can be felt within. Meditation is the state achieved from intense concentration on a single object until all other thoughts vanish and all that is left is an intense awareness of the object. There is nothing else in mind for some time.

Even though yoga has been around for over 5000 years in India, it was relatively unknown till sometime back. It has gained prominence only during recent times. It is estimated that millions of people are practicing yoga in the US and UK. Slowly people are realizing that it could be the single solution for most of the prevalent ills in the modern age. Stress, blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes are the various ailments caused due to our busy life. Yoga has a cure for all of them.

The discipline of yoga has been rejuvenated in modern times. Numerous people have been responsible for this increased awareness of yoga, mainly those who have benefited from it. The primary factor responsible for the rejuvenation in India, the land of its birth, has been Swami Ramdev. Swami Ramdev started relentless efforts to popularize Yoga in 1995 and began his yoga programs in India on television in 2002. He says that through Pranayama (the breathing in of life), the yogic practice of breath control can cure even ‘incurable diseases’. Pranayama helps the body to become a lot more flexible and fitter.

There has been no following larger than that of Swami Ramdev in the recent times. Today, he is one of the biggest draws on Indian television. His programs are followed by millions of people around the country religiously. He believes that all ills can be cured by avoiding medicines, active practice of yoga and simple dietary habits. Yoga along with ayurveda (treatment using herbs) is capable of curing even diseases which are usually not possible to cure using traditional medicines. He strives for a ‘medicine-free’ world for the whole of humanity. His teachings are open to people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world. People have greatly benefited from his week-long camps organized for the needy. People from all religions, young and old, rich, poor, educated and illiterate - each finds a place there. He lays down simple guidelines, which can be followed easily.

His practical approach to Yoga has won him millions of followers throughout India. People have begun to see yoga in a new light, a totally rejuvenated yoga. Other than curing of illnesses and the telecast of his programs on TV, the primary reason for the rejuvenated yoga is the easy manner in which it is presented now. In other words, quick benefits with minimal efforts.

Yoga, with its new presentation, has helped people in developing healthy habits by waking up early in the morning, followed by energizing yoga practice, thanks to TV channels and Swami Ramdev. Technology has contributed immensely to the popularity of yoga. This great phenomenon of enlightening the people has been possible only due to TV, which has taken yoga to the common public. Had it not been so, yoga would have been still at the same place, where it was centuries ago.

Five Reasons for Yoga Instructors to Teach Chair Yoga

1) Your students truly benefit from it.

Your students will likely be either seniors or those with physical limitations. Especially in the case of someone that has not been exercising at all because of their condition, you will often see rapid improvements. Prospective students sometimes report feeling better after a single class.

Liz knew that she was on to something from that very first demonstration to the senior?s group at our church. After the demo, one of the women rushed up to Liz and put her hands in Liz? hands. ?Do you feel that?? she said, ?my hands haven?t felt warm in years!?

While we don’t promise miracles (and neither should you!) we’ve seen chair yoga lower students’ blood pressure, cause them to stop needing anti-anxiety medicine, allow them to sleep better, regain height, relieve the symptoms of chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and much more. Students’ health care professionals will sometimes notice the difference chair yoga is making and ask what they are doing differently. Of course, the patient is always told to keep it up!

2) Your work will be truly appreciated and you?ll hear about it, too.

You will often enjoy having people tell you about all the wonderful things that chair yoga has done to make them more comfortable, healthier, and happier.

Those of us that are younger and don’t have a debilitating condition tend to take some things for granted. Chair yoga might help a person raise their arm above their heads to reach something, or turn their head back to check traffic, when they had lost the ability to do so. I think I’d be appreciative, too!

3) Millions of prospective students and growing daily.

I just saw a statistic that blew my mind ? one baby boomer turns 50 every 8 seconds!

So much has been said about the value of marketing into the coming boom in baby boomer seniors that I shouldn’t have to convince you. Besides, we can all see it happening right before our very eyes.

As a yoga instructor, adding chair yoga to your list of teaching skills is a good way to take advantage of this social phenomenon.

Baby boomers aren’t much interested in retiring to sit back in a rocking chair and wait while their bodies deteriorate from disuse. So no matter what age or stage they are in, they will be seeking ways to keep themselves fit.

Baby boomers are more likely to consider alternate approaches to staying healthy than previous generations, so they will be much more likely to be receptive to the notion of practicing yoga. In fact, many will have some sort of prior experience with yoga, as we have seen.

The oldest of the boomers are just now turning 60, so it is a great time to get serious about teaching chair yoga!

4) There is an abundance of ready-made classes to find.

Most yoga classes come about in an organic fashion, adding one or two students at a time. But by teaching chair yoga, you can find yourself starting whole new classes with several customers all at once.

This is because you are often taking the yoga class to the people where they are already congregating. One of the biggest markets for chair yoga is seniors, and seniors are easy to find already in a group together.

Just where to go will vary depending on where you live, but here are a few ideas to get you started thinking about this:

? Retirement villages, retirement centers, assisted living centers, nursing homes

? Adult day care

? Seniors’ groups at places of worship

? Community centers/Parks and recreation programs

? Fraternal organizations

? Libraries

? YMCA/YWCA

People suffering from particular ailments such as multiple sclerosis or arthritis tend to get together to help each other cope with the disease. All you have to do is find the organizations in your neighborhood that are addressing this need and approach them with the idea of helping the group practice chair yoga. Yoga has been shown to effectively ease the symptoms of many types of ailments, and yet few have anyplace to go where there is a yoga program appropriate for them.

With some brainstorming you can probably come up with a pretty good list appropriate for the circumstances in your community.

The beauty of approaching these groups is that you almost always are proposing to teach yoga to people that never imagined they’d be in a yoga class. That means you aren’t competing with all the yoga teachers trying to capture classes out of the existing pool of practicing yogis and yoginis.

Just how you go about approaching these types of organizations is something that we go into detail about in our Yoga In Chairs teacher training intensives and the materials for the at-home training program.

5) Enjoy having loyal students.

There are many reasons why chair yoga students will be more loyal to you than students in your more traditional classes.

It is likely that they were introduced to yoga by you or by the leadership of the group they are in. Since they never had a notion to seek out yoga before, they will be much less inclined to look for alternative teachers in your area. Plus, as has already been noted, they probably don’t have many other chair yoga programs to turn to, even if they wanted to have choices.

If you take the class to the students it is of course easy for them to participate every time you are there.

Most of your chair yoga customers will be mature people who know the value of being considered reliable. This means that when they make a commitment to participate in a program, they likely will follow through.

In fact, Liz’ students typically call or email her if they are not able to come to class for some reason. She, in turn, contacts them if she notices they were absent from class, especially if it is longer than a few weeks. By simply staying in touch in an unobtrusive way she retains more students.

If you are a yoga instructor and you aren?t already teaching chair yoga, you are encouraged to do so. Not only will you have more classes to teach, but also you will be making a REAL difference in the world.

Mark Franklin enjoys telling people about Liz Franklin’s Yoga In Chairs? because he knows it is helping people live healthier, happier, and longer lives. Basics of Blood Pressure

The heart is a vital organ that pumps blood to different parts of the body. The outflow of the blood takes place when the heart’s left ventricle contracts. Then the blood is forced into the arteries, which expand to receive the incoming blood. These arteries have a muscular lining, which resists this pressure. Thus, the blood is squeezed out of them into the smaller vessels of the body. By blood pressure, we mean the amount of pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the arteries. The amount of pressure depends on the heart muscle’s strength, the amount of blood in the circulatory system and the condition of the arteries.

There are two kinds of pressures - maximum and minimum. The maximum pressure occurs when the left ventricle contracts. It is called systolic pressure. The minimum pressure occurs just before the heartbeat which follows. It is called the diastolic pressure. When a doctor measures the blood pressure, he uses an instrument in which a column of mercury rises or falls under the pressure. It is marked in millimeters. The average systolic pressure in a young man is about 120 mm of mercury and the diastolic pressure is about 80. These figures are usually stated as 120/80 or 120 over 80.

Blood pressure usually rises with age because the arteries become less flexible. Anxiety or exercise may also cause pressure to rise temporarily. It is also increased by a number of diseases. A person is said to have high blood pressure or hypertension of it exceeds the 100 plus his age or if his diastolic pressure is greater than 100. High blood pressure can cause heart failure, apoplexy, or kidney diseases. Abnormally low blood pressure occurs when a person has a heart attack or loses large amount of blood because of some injury etc. When the blood press falls considerably, the oxygen supply to the brain and other parts of the body also are reduced. This can result in serious complications including death. Physicians use drugs, which contract the muscular walls of the blood vessels to raise the blood pressure.

Abnormally high blood pressure may be due to the constriction of arteries. It may also be due to damage to one or both kidneys causing them to release more rennin. Excessive weight and lack of exercise can also contribute to hypertension. High blood pressure may cause heart failure. It may also burst a blood vessel in the eye or the brain and cause blindness or a hemorrhage.

When someone has high or low blood pressure, he or she should consult a good doctor and undergo proper treatment. High blood pressure has no cure but can be kept under control by regular monitoring. With modern technology, it is no longer needed to have a stethoscope and pump meter to display someone’s blood pressure. Instead, electronic gadgets that can be attached to the forearm or even the wrist have appeared that accurately provide the reading to the patient without the help of another person. Such devices should be used regularly by a person diagnosed with high blood pressure to ensure a healthy living.

Yoga and Your Health

Yoga is more than just physical exercise; it is achieving a state of mind. For millions of people, Yoga is a spiritual journey, one that has a number of health benefits. Yoga can help you fulfil yourself both spiritually and can help you hone your physical self into the best you can be. Thus, the benefits of practicing it are three-fold; you will become spiritually enlightened in addition to enjoying the physical benefits of Yoga, which include improvement of both mind and body.

First, let us examine the physiological changes that occur when one takes up the practice of Yoga. When you begin practicing it, you will find that your balance enhances, your blood pressure will lower significantly, your heart will work more proficiently and your endurance will also increase. Likewise, your muscles will strengthen, your flexibility level increases, your range of motion will ultimately improve; and you will find that you have better immunity against communicable diseases. Also, you will find that you achieve more restful and restorative sleep and your physique will eventually display your new, healthful status.

Additionally, along with the myriad physical benefits derived from practicing Yoga, you will be equally pleased with the psychological benefits. For instance, Yoga can reduce the instances in which you experience anxiety or depression, can improve your attention and concentration span, can help you manage unruly emotions, your learning abilities and your memory will improve, and your self-esteem and level of confidence will improve. This, in addition to the physical benefits produced by the practice of Yoga make it worthwhile, but there are even more benefits to partaking in this form of exercise.

Practicing Yoga also has a number of biochemical advantages including lower glucose levels, lower HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, a higher haemoglobin count, a reduction in the level of sodium in your body, a lowering of white blood cells in your body, a lowering of Triglycerides, and an increase in certain vitamin levels in your system. Plus, through the practice of Yoga, you will find that your alertness improves, your focus increases, you reduce symptoms of fatigue and your entire well-being is affected.

There are a variety of ways in which you can introduce yourself to the practice of Yoga. You can take a public class or conversely, you can order instructional videos and books to study at home or with friends. Likewise, you can find information online. Further, there are even some Yogic schools and you might be able to locate one in your local area.

Regardless of whether or not you decide to take classes or if you decide to learn Yoga on your own, you should always pay a visit to your physician for a full checkup before you engage in any new exercise regimen. Also, you must bear in mind that when you start to practice Yoga you should do so slowly. It serves no one if you strain a muscle when you over exercise and you can incur serious and permanent injury if you are not careful.

Prevalence of High Blood Pressure

There is no evidence that average blood pressure in the whole of the general population has risen over the seventy or so years over which measurements are available. There is some indirect evidence that it may be lowered and may still be falling quite independently of medical treatment. Whatever the definition of high blood pressure used, the proportion of people with high blood pressure is directly related to average pressure throughout the population.

Standardized and accurate measurements of blood pressure for large representative populations have only been available since the 1950s in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and the United States and more recently for other countries. There is some evidence from countries whose general diet has shifted from very high to much lower salt intakes - specifically Japan, Belgium and Portugal - that average blood pressure in the general population has fallen, probably for this reason. These reductions in salt intake reflect shifts in methods of food preservation from the traditional methods of salting, pickling and smoking to the modern methods of refrigeration and rapid transport of fresh food. As these changes have occurred in most economically developed countries, average blood pressure has probably fallen everywhere, compared with average levels in the 19th century.

Research in the USA has always shown higher average blood pressures in poorer people. Although research in this country in the 1950s and 1960s failed to show any systematic difference between social groups, this seemed to have changed by the 1980s, with higher average blood pressure in poorer populations throughout the UK. These differences in average blood pressures are not too large, but differences in other risk factors for heart disease show the same trend. Although there is some evidence that coronary heart disease became common after World War I and that it started among rich people, ever since the 1950s it has more and more become a disease for poorer people. This is partly because of the difference in smoking habits, but some of the changes to the pattern may now be caused by these variations in average blood pressure and perhaps by access to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

It should be noted that blood pressure also varies between races and different sorts of societies, but why it does is not an easy question to answer. A number of different factors have been considered. High blood pressure is a serious problem throughout black Africa and black people in North America have much higher blood pressure and stroke problems than Caucasians. However, the differences between black and white North Americans disappear if differences in income are taken into consideration. In the 1960s and 1970s, comparisons between British citizens of Afro-Caribbean and European descent showed no differences, but more recent studies have begun to show the same differences an in the USA.

These differences are evident in the social aspect, rather than racial and social differences in average blood pressure seem to depend mainly on income differences. When North American incomes were much more polarized than British incomes, social differences in the average blood pressure were much higher in the USA than in the UK, but there is evidence that as these societies converge, social differences in average blood pressure are becoming similar in the two countries.

Recent changes in the national health care system contract for general practitioners should have led to most people with high blood pressure being identified, although it is much more doubtful whether most of these are followed up with effective treatment. If all general practice teams developed cardiovascular follow-up clinics for high blood pressure on the same lines as the best have already done and all their patients were treated to the level of quality attained in large clinical trials, an additional 15% of fatal strokes would be prevented and probably 5% of coronary heart disease.

Do You Have A Blood Pressure Monitor At Home?

When you know that you are a blood pressure patient, and the disease has come to stay for some months and years, the precautionary aspects come to the fore. And they demand your adequate attention.

One of the important points of your day to day routine, is monitoring blood pressure. Naturally, you can not go to your family doctor everyday, and certainly not four to five times a day. But you need to keep a record of your blood pressure levels, by making notes of it at regular intervals, say three times in a day. If you show this record to your family doctor at the time of your next check up, it will help him immensely to understand and review the line of treatment he has designed for you!

Like other medical equipments, there are a number of blood pressure monitor manufacturers. Omron, being the world’s leading manufacturer of such instruments, has launched specialized models for home use. Some of the models of blood pressure monitors offered by reputed manufacturers are: manual inflation monitors, automatic inflation monitors and wrist monitors.

The main noteworthy technical point in any blood pressure monitor is whether its merits are clinically proved or not. Accuracy is the hallmark of such instruments, and if they are faulted in that respect, they are no measuring instruments at all! In addition, the job of monitoring should not be complicated. It should be easy, the procedure should be understandable and the results given should be accurate.

The task of monitoring blood pressure has been rendered easy with the advancement of modern technology. You can select from a number of models, the instrument that is suitable for you! The popular models are: wrist blood pressure monitors, automatic and manual digital blood pressure monitors, models with memory, print-out and graph monitors and mechanical blood pressure monitors.
You are already having a weighing machine at your house. Now with this blood pressure monitor, you can tender before your family doctor, the complete picture about the state of your health.

Winning Over High Blood Pressure

There is direct relation between alcohol and blood pressure. Not a happy relationship. You pay for the alcohol and buy blood pressure and again pay for treating the blood pressure! The double loss game!

This is just one strong reason. The disease of blood pressure is due to various other reasons. The crush of the materialistic modern civilization is too much to bear in the metropolitan cities. The modern modes of relaxation have capacity to create further tension! Take for example, one of the entertainment utility-Television!

If you view the News Channel, your mind is likely to get more agitated. Instead of peace of mind, you get piece of mind!

These problems are interrelated and it is difficult to segregate the cause and effect, once you are trapped. For example, too much of alcohol, is the cause of high blood pressure. It is also responsible for weight increase.

Weight increase in itself is the cause of blood pressure. If you take medication for weight loss, again it has the potentialities for side effects. To treat the side effects, your doctor will again give some more medicines. The vicious cycle goes on. You will soon reach a stage, where you suffer form all sorts of deficiencies and diseases.

Blood pressure is only the cover. It has a solid back-up. Many serious, life-threatening diseases are waiting in the side-wings to take over once you are a patient of high blood pressure. They are heart diseases, heart attack, kidney failure, nervous breakdown and many others.

Forget medications for a while. I am not telling you that they are of no use. But the strategy of the moment is to change your lifestyle. Change in your food habits. Think positively that you are capable of beating blood pressure. Just give up junk food for ever. That is one of the contributing factors for your constipation, which again is one of the reasons for increase in your blood pressure.

If you are taking more than 2 spoonfuls salt per day, it is time to cut it. Give up processed foods and switch over to fruits and vegetables. Limit the sweets. Have a regular schedule of exercises. Meditation, breathing exercises, cycling, jogging, brisk walking, all these count a lot in reducing your blood pressure.

Along with the changed habits, develop a habit of thinking positively. Your supreme will power can cure any type of blood pressure.
