Got Only 15 Minutes To Exercise? Then Try This From Yoga

We live in a sound-byte age where our daily demands leave us with little time for exercise, at least in the mornings when it may perhaps be most efficient.

However, Yoga offers a systematic combination of poses, deep breathing and meditation that you could practice in 5-10 minutes-or less depending on your choice-and will also leave you invigorated and eager to step into the day feeling more energized.

So what is this quick routine I am talking about? It is known as the Sun Salutations.

They are very simple to learn and just about anyone, regardless of their fitness or flexibility levels can learn these simple exercises. In actuality, if you are familiar with ?burpies? (the calisthenics exercise), they do derive their origin from them.

Besides being an exercise routine, they are quite indispensable as they do the following.

-They alleviate disorders of the skin and waist.

-They mildly exercise the legs and arms at the same time increasing the circulation and restoring flexibility to the limbs.

-They are one of the best ways to burn calories and reduce weight and are often recommended for obesity and depression.

-They are an effective way of loosening up, stretching and massaging all joints and internal organs of the body.

-They stimulate and balance all the systems of the body including the endocrine, circulatory, reproductive and digestive system.

For directions on how to perform them, study, memorize and practice the following:

1. Stand straight with the palms together as in a prayer position.

2. Inhale and stretch the arms above the head.

3. Exhale and bend forward while touching the toes.

4. Inhale and stretch the right leg away from the body in a big backward step and keep the hands and left foot firmly on the ground. Bending the head backward the left knee should be between the hands.

5. Inhale and hold the breath. Move the left leg from the body and, keeping both feet together and the knees of the floor, rest on the hands (arms straight) and keep the body in a straight line from head to foot.

6. Exhale and lower the body to the floor. In this position, only 8 portions of the body come in contact with the floor: the two feet, two knees, two hands, chest and forehead.

7. Inhale and bend back as much as possible bending the spine to the maximum.

8. Exhale and lift the body of the floor. Keep the feet and heels on the floor.

9. Inhale and bring the right foot along the level of the hands; left foot and knee should touch the ground. Look up, bending the spine slightly (same position as #4)

10. Exhale and bring the left leg forward. Keep the knees straight and bring the head down to the knees as in the third position.

11. Raise the arms overhead and bend backward inhaling. As in Position 2.

12. Exhale and drop the arms and relax.

You have now completed one round.

Perform as many rounds as possible in multiples of 3. Ideally you want to aim for 6 rounds minimum and up to a maximum of 30. It only takes about 5-10 minutes, depending on your speed and intensity and is best practiced with as little clothing as possible before an open air window first thing in the morning.

So when you?ve got little time to spare but need to be energized the way perhaps only physical exercise can, why not try the Sun Salutations. Your body will be glad you did and so will your mind.

Have You Saluted the Sun Today?

A wonderful way to start the day is with yoga and a “salute to the sun”.

This pose is great for warming up your body, as well as being, as with most yoga poses, a great toning exercise, a pose that energizes your body and mind and is an excellent method of breathing control.

You can do the ’salute to the sun” a few times a day. First thing in the morning it get’s your blood pumping, your muscles warmed up and your joints moving. Later on, even two or three more times. the pose can be done as an energizer and stress reliever

Try this -

* Stand with your feet together and palms together in front of the chest. Push your feet into the floor and stretch your necks upwards, lengthening your body as you exhale.

* Breathe in deeply as you raise your arms high, keeping your hands together and bend backwards from the waist.

* Exhale slowly as you bend forwards, placing your hands flat on the floor at the sides of your feet . (Bend your knees if you need to).

* While inhaling, stretch your left leg backwards so it rests on the knee and toes. While doing this bend the right knee and raise your head so you are looking up.

* Holding your breath, bring your right foot backwards besides your left foot. Your body should now make a straight line, just like a push up position, supported on your hands and toes.

* Begin lowering your knees, chest and your forehead to the floor, exhaling as you do this. Try to keep your stomach and pelvis off the ground.

* As you are breathing in raise your upper body by straitening your arms and leave your legs on the ground. Look up at the ceiling.

* Exhale and curl your toes under and then push your butt upwards and back. Press your heels and head down towards the floor.

The last four steps are the reverse of what you were doing in steps 3 - 6

* While inhaling, bring your left foot forward beneath your chest. Your right leg should be extended backwards with the knee resting on the floor.

* Breathe out as you bring your right leg alongside the left. Raise your right leg alongside the left. Raise your buttocks placing your face close to your legs.

* Breathe in as you straighten upward, extend your arms up, hands together then arch yourself backwards.

* Return to your standing position and exhale. Repeat the sequence leading with your right leg so the stretching action is balanced on both sides of the body.

The first few times it will likely be confusing, but after a while this pose will be second nature to you and you’ll be able to included in you schedule.

Yoga is designed so that while you are exercising and practicing the different poses you are also focusing on your breathing and connecting with your body and your spirit. Learn more about yoga.

Yoga Techniques

Yoga is considered the most effective way to stay fit and healthy or to get healthy again. A major advantage of yoga is that you can practise it any time of the day and anywhere you wish.

Yoga techniques are helpful in maintaining your muscles, your joints and even your glands and other inner organs.

The five yoga techniques include:

* 1. posture
* 2. Movement of Joints
* 3. Deep, controlled breathing
* 4. Relaxation
* 5. Meditation

Each technique has it’s own role and function. Some techniques support each other or prepare the body for one another.

1. Postures

There are many different postures from easy to highly demanding. The essence is not to judge oneself, but to observe oneself. A less demanding posture, standing, sitting or lying executed with dedication is always more preferable and effective.

2. Movement of Joints
To achieve a certain posture, supplety of the joints is a necessity. The joints are trained, albeit in a gentle manner, to perform these postures. This training includes, amongst others, the neck, the hands, the arms and the legs and not forgetting very importantly the back.

3. Deep Breathing

Postures and movement of the joints are supported throughout by deep, controlled breathing. Let your breath flow whilst practising yoga. Remember - certain postures/movements are performed during inhaling whilst others are performed whilst exhaling. You should never hold your breath. The longer one exhales the calmer one gets.

There are also breathing techniques such as pranayama which can be executed in an upright sitting position. ‘Prana’ or breathing, supplies the body with new energy.

4. Relaxation

Relaxation after exercising is equally as important as the exercise itself. This releases the tensions built during the exercise and allows one to mentally relive the exercise.

5. Meditation

After preparing your body through posture, movement of joints, deep breathing and relaxation the spirit is ready for meditation. The yoga techniques help to increase the awareness and one can focus on concentration. Through concentrating the thoughts on one subject, the spirit calms down and as a result one feels contentment.

Yoga Blocks Are A Good Support System

Any exercise when done correctly would help in getting the proper results. Every part of the body would be rejuvenated by getting your exercise right. The yoga blocks used for doing yoga asanas would create extra strength which you need. This helps in doing most of your asanas without strain. Some of the asanas which can be done with the help of this foam is Pincha Mayurasana (Feathered Peacock Pose),or use it to ground your lower hand in standing poses as well as a good support for your hips in bridge pose. The foam would reduce the distance of your hand from the ground making it easier to do the asanas easily.

You can get these blocks in different colors to suit your personality as well as according to your needs. These blocks are of great purpose as some of the poses which many may find it hard to do can be modified as it will get the floor closer to you. These are very lightweight and can be used on regular basis. These are easy to grip making it easy to handle the block. There are blocks made of cork too which are very durable and made of natural materials which make it environment friendly. These provide the comfort and support which is required for doing the asanas.

There are foam wedges which are also very important for doing the asanas. It is mainly used for keeping it under your heels while squatting or under the hips while doing forward bends. These foam wedges make the exercise easy and equally manageable. One can also use this to avoid the overstretching or pressuring your joints for poses such as facing dog or upward bow.

What is Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga Part-III

As described earlier, Ashtanga Yoga has eight limbs or parts. So far Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama has been described. In the present article Pratyahar, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi shall be described.

Pratyahar(withdrawal)

Before Pratyahar one should lie in Sukhasana comfortably and motionlessly. Then one should practice Pranayama by keeping mind on the movements of breath across the nostrills. After half an hour in Pranayama, there is cut off in inhalation and exhalation. Mind and Pranabreath for practical purpose) become one and motionless. In this state one should practice Pratyahar.

Patanjali describes - when senses leave their objects of enjoyment and get engaged in realising true self(svarup), it is called Pratyahar(II>54). So far Yoga is concerned, there are two directions - one is outside and the other is inside. Outside there is enjoyment(bhoga) and enjoying(ahara) and inside there is Yoga and Pratyahar(withdrawal from enjoyment). So long as senses are fixed on the objects of enjoyment, there is enjoying(ahara); but as soon as senses withdraw from them, there is Yoga and Pratyahar.

In enjoyment there is loss of energy; whereas in Yoga there is conservation of energy. Inside there is treasure of energy, happiness, knowledge, health and longivity; but outside there is loss of energy, pain, ignorance, disease and death. as people take their earned money from home and spend them outside, so people earn energy, happiness inside, but spend them outside. People who spend more and more money outside, get bankrupt and people who spend more and more energy outside get diseased. So a true Yogi earns more and more energy inside, but spends less and less outside to remain happy, knowledgeable and healthy.

Pratyahar is practiced after Pranayama in the same posture(sukhasana). It is a mental excercise only. In the legs there are six sets of joints and in the body there are six Chakra. From the tip of fingers in the legs one should rise upwards joint by joint and Chakra by Chakra. In each joint or Chakra one should remain for a while and feel that lower parts from that joint or Chakra have gone senseles. In this manner one should reach Ajna Chakra in between eyebrows. At Ajna Chakra one should feel that there is no sensual feeling of the body. One should see nothing, hear nothing or feel nothing. There is neither the feeling of the body nor of the material world.

Dharana(to hold), Dhyana(meditation)and Samadhi(total concentration)

Dharana means to hold. After one withdraws oneself from the gross body and senses, one should hold mind firmly. One can enter into Samadhi through this mind only. The saints and sages of Ancient India first realisd that nothing is as great as mind in the whole universe. Mind is the cause of everything; creation, maintenance and destruction of this universe goes on because of this mind only. It is also the cause of bondage and liberation of all. Mind can be a good servent, good friend as well as good master. So in Dharana one learns how to hold mind firmly for own liberation.

After Dharana comes Dhyana(meditation). In Yoga meditator, meditation and the object of medition are one. Because the aim of Yoga is to realise the true self. In Dharana and Dhyana mind should be fixed at Ajna Chakra in between eyebrows(trikuti). Eyes should be closed in practicing all the limbs of Yoga starting from Asana to Samadhi. However religious masters teach to meditate upon some symbols or pictures of Gods and Goddesses with eyes open. Through such meditation mind does not come inwards and so no Yoga shall be practised.

Through regular and sincere practice of Pranayama, Pratyahar, Dharana and Dhyana, one may enter into Samadhi one day. Only a true and rare practitioner achieves this state, also called Turiya. Normally all men experience three states - waking, dreaming and deep sleep. The state of Turiya, which is the fourth state of a being, is experienced by a Yogi alone. This is such a dreaming state, where one is awake while sleeping. This is such a waking state, where one does not use one’s body and senses. This is such a deep sleep where one is fully concious. As without sound sleep a man cannot remain healthy and peaceful, so without Turiya a man cannot be healthy and peaceful completely. For complete peace and bliss, for complete knowledge, freedom and liberation, every individual should practice Yoga and try out to reach the state of Turiya or Samadhi.

How to Become a Successful Yoga Teacher

How do you measure success? Do you think of physical, mental, spiritual, influential, or monetary success? It is important to be honest with yourself and know that you may be very successful in one area, but not in another.

Therefore, look at your strengths and be honest with yourself about what your goals really are. There have been many successful Yogis, and some spiritual leaders, who had the clothes on their backs as their only possessions. They did not pursue material wealth, but instead, helped others until their last day.

How can I say they were successful? They chose the path that they wanted, and some have had tremendous influence without material wealth. They were men and women of conscience who humbled the powerful.

This is not to say that a Yoga teacher must live in poverty to be influential. An oath of poverty to help humankind is noble, but not for everyone. Personally, a balanced approach to physical, mental, spiritual, influential, and monetary success is easier for most of us to live with. Let?s take a look at the five successes and see how you can build on them, help others, and live the best life you can.

If you teach Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, or another physical style of Yoga, your body will be in ?good shape.? Many people perceive good shape to mean muscles, but forget about the benefits to the joints, bones, and internal organs. Yoga is good for all of them and is a total health program.

Anyone who takes the time to meditate, and practice pranayama, will have better mental health. As a serious Yoga practitioner, or Yoga teacher, you should practice this daily, even if you do not have Yoga classes today. All of the other forms of success will yield mental health, as well.

Some styles of Yoga are more spiritual than others. In the west, most practitioners only think of Hatha Yoga, but there are many other spiritual Yoga styles. However, if spiritual Yoga does not fit into your lifestyle, prayers will help. Spiritual health is just as important as any other type of success.

The power of influence is a part of teaching Yoga. Therefore, never misuse it and never take advantage of your Yoga students, family, or friends. However, if you see an opportunity that will help the common good, never avoid using the influence you have acquired.

About money: Some people think, ?Money is the root of evil.? I totally disagree because money is only a commodity, such as energy. If we misuse it, that is our loss, but if we help others, that is rewarding to all of us. Much like when we use energy, we are only temporary ?keepers of money.?

Make use of money, and help those who you can. Strangely, more money will come back to you, as a result of being charitable. This is the cycle of karma, success, and life.

There is nothing wrong with success and self-improvement. When you take each aspect of success, and develop them all in harmony for the common good, that is also a form of Yoga. You might even refer to this method as the ?Union of Success,? which could be named ?Jayati Yoga.?
